Distances that look short on the map take longer than expected.
It's roughly 300km from Hobart to Cradle Mountain, but plan on five to six hours rather than the three the map suggests — the roads through the central highlands are winding and slow in places, and most people stop at least once in Launceston or Deloraine along the way.
Book Cradle Mountain accommodation well ahead in summer; the area has limited beds and fills up fast. The park itself requires a shuttle bus during peak periods, so check current access rules before driving in.
