Layers are everything in the outback. Days at Uluru can hit 40°C in summer while nights drop below 5°C, especially between June and August — pack for both extremes rather than one.
A wide-brim hat, high-SPF sunscreen and at least two litres of water per person per day are non-negotiable for the base walk. Flies are relentless outside of the cooler months, so a head net is worth the mild indignity.
