Kangaroo Island is Australia's third-largest island, separated from the mainland long enough ago that several species here evolved in relative isolation from mainland predators and pressures — part of why wildlife encounters feel so much more reliable here than almost anywhere else in the country.

Seal Bay is the standout stop, and it works because of how it's managed — a licensed guide walks you directly onto the beach among a resting colony of Australian sea lions, close enough to watch pups play without a fence or boardwalk between you and them. It's one of very few places in Australia where you can get that close to a wild marine mammal colony legally and responsibly.
Flinders Chase National Park, on the island's western end, holds the Remarkable Rocks — a cluster of wind- and rain-sculpted granite boulders balanced on a headland — and Admirals Arch, a natural rock archway usually populated by New Zealand fur seals resting underneath it. Both are worth the drive out, which takes a while; the island is bigger than it looks on a map.
The 2020 bushfires burned through roughly half the island, including most of Flinders Chase itself, and it's worth being upfront about that rather than pretending it didn't happen. The park has regenerated substantially since, wildlife populations have recovered well, and the visitor infrastructure is fully rebuilt — if anything, the visible regrowth now adds an extra layer of interest for anyone curious how ecosystems recover.
Food and wine here deserves more attention than it gets. The island has a genuine small-producer culture — honey, marron, cheese, and a handful of boutique wineries — worth building a slower day around rather than treating the island purely as a wildlife checklist.
